Leg Pain

What Causes Leg Pain?

Leg pain can arise from a variety of causes musculoskeletal, vascular, or neurological. Identifying the underlying issue is essential for effective treatment. At Buderim Foot & Ankle our podiatrists commonly diagnose and manage leg pain caused by:

Shin Splints (Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome):

Pain along the inner edge of the shinbone, often due to overuse, poor biomechanics, or improper footwear, common in runners and active individuals.

    Plantar Fasciitis Referral Pain:

Severe heel pain from plantar fasciitis can radiate up into the calf or lower leg, particularly with prolonged standing or walking.

    Sciatica and Nerve Entrapments:

Radiating pain, tingling, or burning from the lower back down the leg caused by nerve compression, can mimic musculoskeletal leg pain.

    Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD):

Poor circulation leads to cramping, pain during walking (claudication), cold feet, or slow-healing leg wounds.

    Muscle Overuse or Strain:

Tightness, fatigue, or pain in the leg muscles due to overtraining, poor posture, or lack of support from footwear.

    Achilles Tendinopathy:

Pain and stiffness at the back of the lower leg near the heel due to inflammation or degeneration of the Achilles tendon.

    Flat Feet or High Arches:

Abnormal foot structure affects leg alignment and gait mechanics, contributing to chronic fatigue or leg pain during activity.

    How Podiatrists Diagnose Leg Pain

At Buderim Foot & Ankle, we perform a thorough biomechanical assessment to determine the exact cause of your leg pain. This may include:

    • Gait analysis (walking and running assessments)
    • Footwear evaluation
    • Muscle and joint testing
    • Postural assessment
    • Vascular and neurological screening (to rule out circulation or nerve issues)

      Podiatry Treatments for Leg Pain

Once the cause of your leg pain is identified, we create a personalised treatment plan. Treatment options may include:

      • Custom orthotics to improve foot and leg alignment
      • Footwear advice or modifications
      • Stretching and strengthening programs
      • Shockwave therapy for tendon-related pain
      • Taping or bracing for support
      • Dry needling or soft tissue therapy
      • Referral to physiotherapy, GP, or imaging if needed

Our goal is to relieve your leg pain at its source—not just treat the symptoms.
