Plantar Warts
What are Plantar Warts?
Plantar warts are a type of skin growth that develop on the soles of the feet, commonly in pressure areas such as the heels or balls of your foot. Plantar warts are caused by the HPV virus entering through small breaks in the skin. Plantar warts may cause discomfort but are manageable; many resolve on their own however treatment is available if clinically needed.
Symptoms of Plantar Warts
- Rough, thickened skin lesions with a grainy texture.
- Tiny black dots (clotted blood vessels) in the center.
- Pain or tenderness when standing or walking.
- Callus-like buildup over the wart.
- Clusters forming larger “mosaic” patterns.
These can mimic other issues, so professional checks bring clarity.
Diagnosis
A podiatrist examines the lesion’s appearance, location, and texture, sometimes trimming overlying skin for a closer look. If unclear, a biopsy rules out other concerns, offering reassurance and a plan.
Causes of Plantar Warts
The virus thrives in warm, damp places and spreads via:
- Barefoot walking in pools, showers, or gyms.
- Skin cuts or abrasions allowing entry.
- Moist feet from sweat or poor drying.
- Weakened immunity slowing clearance.
Not everyone exposed gets them—your body’s defenses play a role.
Preventative Measures
- Wear flip-flops in public wet areas.
- Keep feet clean and dry; change socks often.
- Avoid sharing footwear or towels.
- Don’t pick at warts to prevent spread.
- Cover cuts with plasters during activities.
When to See a Podiatrist
If warts hurt, spread, or don’t improve, or if you’re unsure—especially with diabetes or kids—reach out. Early care eases worries and speeds healing.
